Resolving Outlook Error – Scanpst.exe Used by Another Application!
Microsoft has endowed people with a very useful application i.e. MS Outlook which is a part of MS Office package and helps people to manage their emails, attachments, contacts, notes, calendars, journals and other email objects. This application efficiently stores all these stuffs in one large file i.e. PST file. But there is a limitation to this maximum size of PST file i.e. in Outlook 2002 and its prior versions which is of 2GB. When the PST file reaches this maximum size limit, it gets corrupt and all its data becomes inaccessible. However, oversized issue of PST is not the only issue due to which the PST file gets corrupt, it also gets corrupt due to other reasons as well like abrupt shutdown, virus attack, network sharing leading to accessibility and so on.
In order to resolve this issue, Microsoft has provided an inbuilt utility called Inbox Repair Tool which automatically gets installed in the computer system when MS Office suite gets installed in the computer system. However, if Outlook is not installed properly in the computer system, then the tool fails to scan the PST file to remove all the reasons of corruption. When you locate this file in your computer system and then try to repair the corrupt PST file then possibly you may encounter this error message –
"The file C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\SCANPST.EXE is in use by another application. Close Microsoft Office Outlook and all other mail-enabled applications and try again."
The error occurs even when no other application or process is accessing or using the file.
This error message generally occurs because of faulty Outlook installation due to which Scanpst.exe is unable to start. To fix this issue you need to correct the Outlook installation by running ‘Detect and Repair’ or you need to reinstall Outlook to fix the issue. Along with that you can also transfer the corrupt PST to some other computer which has Outlook installed on it properly to repair the file. But in case you have the backup of the PST file, then you can simply delete the file and if the issue is not still resolved then you have to use third party Outlook PST Repair software which will effectively help you to recover corrupt PST file and will effectively restore all your mails, notes, contacts, journals and others.
