You need not to connect with server each time to access your mails. PST files have two part that is The File Header and The Data Part. Don't store your PST file on a shared network. Microsoft neither support nor recommend it.
Don't backup your PST file while Outlook is running.
Don't shut down your computer while Outlook is running.
Don't create PST file in Outlook 97-2002 (ANSI format) or when it is around 2GB. You will have to crop this PST and create new to work with.
After creating the backup always verify it is working or not especially when you are about to delete the original one.
And with the above error message your Outlook will become inaccessible.
